Holiday Playschemes – from 5 to 14 years

  • These groups run in school holidays, they provide fun, safe activities for school age children, although some groups may offer activities for the younger age groups.
  • Holiday playschemes can fill the gap for working parents whose children attend Breakfast and After School Clubs that only run in term time. They can usually be booked by the day or the week and so can also be used by children looking for fun holiday activities.
  • Out of school services including holiday playshemes are also sometimes called kids' clubs.
  • Most will offer part time places, some only mornings or afternoons, other groups run all day and can offer extended days from 8 to 6 to meet the needs of working parents.
  • They can be based in schools or at local leisure, sports and recreational sites.
  • They can offer a range of activities and facilities that can include games, sports and sports training, swimming, computing, craft activities and days outings. Some activities can incur extra costs.
  • Not all groups need to be registered to provide childcare by OFSTED for example groups catering for children aged over 8.
  • Whilst some groups may have odd places that can be booked at short notice others get booked up very quickly so it is best to book the sessions you require as early as possible to ensure a place is available when you need it.

Further information on the registration and inspection of childcare can be obtained from Ofsted's helpline 0845 6014771 or by visiting the Ofsted website. We recommend that Ofsted inspection reports are viewed before choosing a childcare provider. These can be downloaded from the Ofsted website or contact the CIS to make arrangements to read the latest report. All childcare providers should have copies of their latest inspection report available to view at the premises.
