Why Children Benefit from a Routine
To gain maximum benefit from the session both children and adults need a consistent routine, so that they can be clear about what is happening. Emotional security comes from knowing what to expect from a situation, being able to understand what is going on, and being able to develop at one's own pace. When children are familiar with the structure of the day, they are able to make informed choices rather than random ones about where and how they want to play. They are then less likely to get frustrated when changes occur.
A regular programme helps children begin to discover the concept of time. It helps them to understand the sequence of events throughout the session. This boosts confidence and self-esteem. Once children feel secure in the setting they begin to explore, discover, create, and to develop independence. This growing independence means that adults are released from time spent doing or getting things for children and/or directing them, and are free to interact, play, listen and observe.
This interaction and observation helps the adult appreciate the interests and potential for development in each child. This assists with planning and evaluating your sessions. Curriculum plans are more relevant, effective and focused with clear and meaningful learning intentions, because the team or key worker is equipped with awareness of individual needs.
