The Essential Features of a Routine
The routine should be a blend of the following qualities:
Consistency - so that everyone can feel a sense of security.
Clarity - so that everyone is clear about what is happening now and what will happen next - and why.
Balance - give children experiences and opportunities that are varied. Try not to have similar experiences side by side e.g. sitting for snack, followed by sitting for story, followed by sitting for small group time.
Unhurried - give children time to do things at their own pace. It does not matter if snack time is ten minutes late if the children are engrossed in an activity.
Flexibility - be prepared to change the routine to accommodate spontaneous events or adapt it to meet the needs of the children.
