Developing your Routine
It is important to tailor the routine for the children and staff of your setting. Observe the children working before introducing the routine. Watch where and how they play. Discuss as a staff team what is required in the routine and proposed times. Consult with the children about what they enjoy. It will take time to get the right blend of activities - at the right time. It could necessitate several re-adjustments.
On the introduction of a new system, explain to the children what will be happening - try not to make too many changes all at once. To review how successful the routine is, take time out of the session to observe. Consider how purposeful the play is, how confident the children are, how free the adults are to engage and interact with the children (not tied up with ’management’ tasks).
